Intensifying War of Words Involving Ethiopia and Eritrean Government Raises Concerns of Conflict

Mounting worries are present about the potential of military engagement among East African neighbors, Ethiopia and Eritrea, as aggressive discourse has escalated in the last month.

The Ethiopian government and The Eritrean government were allies in the civil war in Tigray but they have later become estranged.

What Did Ethiopia Declared?

Landlocked Ethiopia's requests for entry to the maritime outlet through Eritrean territory has sparked a heated verbal exchange.

The Ethiopian leader initially stated publicly in 2023 that his country's sea access was an existential matter, comments that Eritrean authorities dismissed.

Diplomatic connections between the two countries have often been tense. Following a decades-long fight for sovereignty, Eritrea, which has a 1,350km (840-mile) maritime frontage, officially seceded from Ethiopia in 1993, leaving it without sea access.

Subsequently, a military clash erupted in which more than 100,000 people were killed.

Current Statements from Ethiopian Leadership

Prime Minister Abiy and army chief the army commander have publicly asserted control of Eritrean southern port of the port of Assab – about 60km from the border - and implied the wish to seize it militarily.

In early September, Abiy said Ethiopia's "error" of losing access to the Red Sea as a because of Eritrea secession would be "rectified tomorrow".

Ethiopia's ambassador to neighboring Kenya, ex-military officer Bacha, said that the port was "belonging to Ethiopia" and would be restored "using武力".

Eritrea's Answer to the Statements

In the face of persistent threats from Ethiopia, Asmara's position has been limited to short statements on online platforms from Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel.

The minister has dismissed Ethiopia's push for sea access calling it "risky" and a "harmful plan" of "irredentism" – a strategy of retaking lost territory.

Government spokespeople alerted on recently that moves to justify "flagrant aggression" would have significant repercussions for the Ethiopian government and its neighbors and is a "redline that should not be crossed|violated|breached".

Security Preparations on the Region

There have been no reports of large-scale army activities in the boundary zones between the neighboring states.

Nevertheless, in Ethiopia, government media has displayed graduation ceremonies of many recruits at different defense facilities.

The head of staff section of the defense force, Lt Gen Hachalu Sheleme, recently said in an conversation that the defense forces was in a "reliable position" as "numerous of young people" were entering service, which he said was "a warning to our adversaries".

Past Roots of the Conflict

For more than half a century from 1890, Eritrea was administered by Italian rulers.

After the end of Italian rule, it was then managed by the British administration before evolving into a federated part of the Ethiopian empire.

Yet in 1962 the Ethiopian emperor terminated this system and Eritrea became fully incorporated into the Ethiopian state.

A extended civil war occurred, concluding with military reversal in the early 1990s. Independence was then confirmed by voters in a referendum in 1993.

Briefly in the 1990s, there were good relations between the authorities in Ethiopia's capital and Asmara, but they clashed over the precise positioning of their mutual frontier, resulting in hostilities in 1998.

Though this ended in a truce in 2000, it was incompletely executed, and the two nations remained at odds.

This ended in 2018, when the Prime Minister made approaches to Eritrean President President Isaias. The two signed a announcement that the conflict was concluded – a action that earned the Prime Minister the Nobel Peace Prize.

The both administrations were then partners in the country's 2020-2022 internal conflict in Tigray.

However ties have later worsened once more.
