Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to challenge specific rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
